POSITION OVERVIEW

The Portland African American Leadership Forum (PAALF) seeks a new member of its team. This is a dynamic position that includes fundraising, development, and communications responsibilities with a strong connection to PAALFs programmatic work and mission. The successful candidate will be able to support PAALF’s vision of building capacity in communities of African descent to advance civic engagement in the Portland metro area.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Donor Data & Relations:

    • Develop materials and collateral related to fundraising and donor outreach.

    • Maintain relationships and periodically check-in with donors.

    • Organize two annual donor thank-a-thons after the Gala and the end of the year appeal.

    • Assist with identifying potential donors and helping to close on donations where relationships have been previously cultivated by Board and Staff.

    • Occasional offsite meeting with potential donors to talk about PAALF.

    • Track and process donations and prepare acknowledgment letters and other correspondence with donors.

    • Draft grant applications and reports as well as prospecting for new funding sources.

    • Gathers statistics and data to create various reports related to program evaluation and fundraising.

    • Assist in annual mailings to individual and institutional donors.

    • Ensure donor and contact management databases information is current and accurate for all donors and funders.

    • Keep up-to-date on current nonprofit fundraising practices.

    • Research and make recommendations for potential fundraising strategies.

    • Provide other fundraising or development support as requested by the ED.

    • Work with program staff to develop funding and community-related projects.

  • Communications:

    • Maintain PAALF’s website and develop content for PAALF’s print and electronic communications (press releases, media advisories, memos, talking points, op-eds, social media and web content, and other materials as needed under a tight deadline).

    • Implement PAALF’s social media strategy.

    • Assist in special event preparation, planning, promotion and execution.

    • Draft press releases as need.

    • Support PAALF in outreach and fundraising efforts.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend staff meetings, other administrative meetings and events.

  • Assist with educational programming implementation as needed.

  • Overall management and maintenance of PAALF’s growing internal volunteer databases and other person-level data.

  • Build digital civic capacity within the Black community to advance nonpartisan solutions; work with internal and external staff to establish best practices and standards for data collection, acquisition, and preservation.

  • Understand and apply data analytics related to the campaign email list, website, and social channels to improve the effectiveness of the campaign.

  • Work with PAALF’s volunteer digital team to produce creative and engaging content for social media, including graphics and video.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

  • Understanding of local community-based organizations and respect for their leaders and programs.

  • A sincere desire to do things differently than our movement has done in the past.

  • Creativity in message delivery and plan design, ability to look at communications challenges differently, and respond with innovative solutions.

  • Robust verbal communications and interpersonal skills.

  • Deep understanding of messaging across audiences with an ability to match content and tone accordingly.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and eagerness to work in a team environment.

  • Self-motivated individual with creative problem-solving skills, and ability to organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines.

  • A solutions-oriented approach, with a willingness to take the initiative, while juggling several priorities that may change quickly.

  • Expert knowledge of social media — principally Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram — and an ability to quickly learn new platforms as needed.

  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Suite.

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred but not necessary.

  • Availability to work limited evenings and weekends, typically not more than twice per month.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.

COMPENSATION

Full-time at 30 hours a week at $25.00 an hour. Paid time off is based on tenure with the organization and includes accruals of sick and vacation hours. We recognize paid holidays per the calendar year.
